i think it's been clear that there's a lot to mine with 1984 from every aspect possible. so, i'm thankful to george orwell and dr. moffitt for giving me that freedom. so far i've talked about fortnite and the capitol and dread, so what am i trying to talk about right now? i think i'm going to take a break from the chapter, sequential type of storytelling, and go macro with an element i like about this narrative as a whole. bear with me here.
i like the topic i struck with blog post four, which is a matter of tone-- tone is, to me, very powerful. of course it is, that's a no-brainer, it's one of the fundamental tools used in storytelling. but i like when it's deployed very artfully how it is in 1984 and other kinds of similar works. like 1984-- it creeps in from the start and worms its way into your brain, with gaps of hope all over the place. it reminds me of how ivy and roots sink themselves into the ground with pockets of air poking out.
like, how do we start? with this element of unease and paranoia, yes, but its offset against the feeling that hey-- everything should be and is perfectly fine don't worry about it thank you very much. as we go deeper, the paranoia and darkness seeps in more and more, but with that, the hope grows stronger. and then it all gets blotted out before you even realize.
this was just my rumination on tone, thank you for reading. i just wanted to get those thoughts out of my head before we dive into the nitty-gritty of what this book wants to do to us, which, hoo boy, is a lot
